Débora Mesa
Principal Of Ensamble Studio And Co-Founder Of WoHo
Débora Mesa is a leading Spanish architect and the principal of Ensamble Studio, a practice she leads alongside Antón García-Abril. Her work is renowned for its radical experimentation with structural engineering, material science, and the landscape, often blurring the lines between natural formations and man-made structures. After joining the firm in 2003, she became a partner and played a pivotal role in evolving the studio into an international powerhouse with offices in Madrid and Boston. Mesa is known for her “hands-on” approach to architecture, leading projects that utilize massive precast concrete, repurposed industrial materials, and geological excavations, such as the “Truffle” house, the “Structures of Landscape” in Montana, and the “Ca’n Terra” quarry house in Menorca. In addition to her design practice, she is a distinguished academic who has taught at the MIT School of Architecture and Planning, where she co-founded the POPlab (Prototypes of Permission Laboratory) to research new construction technologies and industrial processes. Her contributions to the field have earned her international recognition, including the RIBA International Fellowship and the Emerging Voices award from the Architectural League of New York.
