Alvaro Picardo is a Spanish artisan and designer whose work elevates the humble lampshade into a piece of functional fine art. Born in Barcelona and based in London since 1993, Picardo spent decades immersed in the worlds of interior design and art collecting before transitioning to his own creative practice in 2020. His hand-painted shades are characterized by a rigorous, “quietly architectural” sensibility, drawing heavy inspiration from Brutalist geometry, Modern British art, and the Mediterranean clarity of his Catalan roots. By treating each shade as a three-dimensional canvas, he explores the intersection of light and color, collaborating with prestigious interior design houses and brands such as Svenskt Tenn, Studio Atkinson, and Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler to create bespoke pieces that anchor contemporary and historical interiors alike.
