
Matthias Sauerbruch
Founding Partner of Sauerbruch Hutton
Matthias Sauerbruch is a German architect and urban planner, best known as the founding partner of Sauerbruch Hutton, an internationally acclaimed architecture and urban design firm established in 1989 alongside Louisa Hutton. Based in Berlin, the practice is renowned for its innovative use of color, sustainable design strategies, and integration of architecture with urban context. Born in Konstanz, Germany, in 1955, Sauerbruch studied architecture at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin and the Architectural Association in London, graduating in 1984. He began his professional career at Rem Koolhaas’s Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) in London, where he led the design of the House at Checkpoint Charlie project. In 1989, he co-founded Sauerbruch Hutton, which has since completed notable projects such as the GSW Headquarters in Berlin, the Federal Environment Agency in Dessau, and the Museum Brandhorst in Munich.
