ELEMENTS is a 32-minute montage film directed by Italian architect and video artist Davide Rapp in 2014. The film was created for the 14th International Architecture Exhibition – Fundamentals – at the Venice Biennale, curated by Rem Koolhaas. It was part of the Elements of Architecture exhibition, which explored the fundamental components of buildings.
In ELEMENTS, Rapp assembled over 500 short clips from more than 200 films, each depicting architectural elements such as balconies, ceilings, corridors, doors, elevators, escalators, façades, floors, fireplaces, ramps, roofs, stairs, toilets, walls, and windows. The film serves as a cinematic exploration of how these elements have been represented in cinema, offering a unique lens on architecture through the medium of film.
The project was a significant undertaking for Rapp, involving the viewing of dozens of films daily over six months to cut and catalog thousands of clips. He completed the film just hours before its premiere at the Biennale. In 2024, marking the 10th anniversary of its debut, Rapp announced he was working on a restored and expanded director’s cut of ELEMENTS, incorporating previously excluded scenes and new material discovered over the years.
