Petra Blaisse
Founder of Inside Outside
Petra Blaisse is a prolific Dutch designer whose work operates at the intersection of landscape architecture, interior design, and textile art, famously bridging the gap between the static nature of buildings and the fluid movement of the natural world. After beginning her career at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, she transitioned into freelance exhibition design and eventually formed her own multidisciplinary studio, Inside Outside, in 1991. Her professional philosophy centers on the relationship between “inside” and “outside,” utilizing light, acoustics, and textiles to create site-specific interventions that redefine architectural spaces. Blaisse is globally recognized for her long-standing collaboration with Rem Koolhaas and OMA, contributing iconic elements like the monumental gold-leaf curtain for the Netherlands Dance Theatre and the intricate landscape for the Seattle Central Library. Beyond her design practice, she has been a significant intellectual contributor to the field, having co-founded the influential landscape magazine Pages Paysages in 1987. Her work, which spans from private gardens to large-scale urban master plans like the Biblioteca degli Alberi in Milan, has earned her international acclaim for its ability to introduce soft, transient layers into the built environment.
