Sumayya Vally – Keynote
Founder of Counterspace Studio
Sumayya Vally is an influential South African architect and researcher whose work is celebrated for its deep engagement with community, hybrid identities, and the histories of the Global South. Born in 1990 in Pretoria, she grew up in the township of Laudium during the final years of apartheid—a background that profoundly shaped her interest in how architecture can both enforce division and foster connection. Her career is characterized by a “forensic” design methodology, where she uses oral histories, ritual, and overlooked community spaces as the foundation for modern architectural forms. Vally achieved international acclaim in 2021 when she became the youngest architect ever commissioned to design the Serpentine Pavilion in London. Her design for the pavilion was unique in its collaborative nature, incorporating fragments of diverse London neighborhoods and cultural hubs into the final structure.
In terms of leadership, Sumayya Vally is the Founder and Principal of Counterspace, an award-winning architecture and research studio established in 2015. Based between Johannesburg and London, the studio operates at the intersection of traditional architectural practice and academic research, focusing on the development of design languages specific to the African continent and Islamic cultures. Beyond her firm, she has held major global roles, such as serving as the Artistic Director for the inaugural Islamic Arts Biennale in Jeddah in 2023. She is also a dedicated educator, having directed “Unit 12” at the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg and currently holding professorships at institutions like the Harvard Graduate School of Design and the Bartlett School of Architecture. Her career continues to redefine the architect’s role as a listener and a translator of marginalized histories into permanent, public landmarks.
