Born in Montbéliard, France, in 1958, Michel Desvigne is a preeminent landscape architect renowned for his rigorous, contemporary approach to urban design and large-scale territorial transformation. He holds a degree in natural sciences (botany and geology) from the University of Lyon and graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure de Paysage (ENSP) in Versailles in 1984. Desvigne gained early distinction as the first landscape architect to be a resident at the Villa Medici in Rome (1986–1988), where he conducted foundational research into “Elementary Gardens.” Since founding his Paris-based firm, MDP (Michel Desvigne Paysagiste), in 1988, he has collaborated with world-class architects like Renzo Piano, Norman Foster, and Herzog & de Meuron on landmark projects such as the Marseille Vieux-Port, the Paris-Saclay cluster, and the Greenwich Peninsula in London. A leading educator, he has served as the president of the board of directors at ENSP Versailles since 2008 and has held visiting professorships at Harvard University and the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio. His career is marked by prestigious accolades, including the Grand Prix National de l’Urbanisme (2011), reflecting his influence in bridging the gap between natural geography and human infrastructure.
